Hello, "Robin!"

Picture
In 2019, we bought an 18' 1975 Scotty Serro HiLander trailer with the intention of converting her into a traveling flower market.  Scotty trailers were built in Irwin, Pennsylvania from 1957 to 1997.  The HiLander was a new style for the Scotty "canned ham" trailers.  It was called a Trunkback because of the rear storage bump-out. The 1975 model was one of the last years to feature the robin's egg blue exterior.  We've named our trailer "Robin."

Robin will provide us additional private CSA market locations.  We'll announce some 2020 market locations later this year. We're also on the lookout for some fun 2020 summer festivals, so contact us if you know of some.

We're happy to announce that "Robin" will be at  Family Farm Day on September 28, 2019 in Cockeysville, MD.
In the meantime, you can follow "Robin's" renovation progress here.

From Camper to Mobile Flower Market.

This 1975 Scotty Serro Highlander seemed to be in pretty good shape.  We did notice some previous water damage upon purchase, as all trailers from this era seemed to have, so we know we have some walls that will need repair. With no need for a kitchen or bathroom, these areas will be removed, as well as the clothing cabinets and refrigerator.  To keep the structural integrity, the front benches and back bench/bed platform will be incorporated into the new design.  There will be plenty of floor space in the new design, so customers can step into Robin to shop for flowers. They can even have a seat at the benches and table to spend a few minutes enjoying the beauty and fragrance of our fresh flowers.

She's no longer a camper! Everything we
aren't going to use has been taken out. The person who sold her to us is going to take all the components we removed.  He'll use them in his many Scotty renovations.  Almost all parts will live on!
Just like when renovating an old house (we have some experience with that, as we fully renovated our 1880 farmhouse), you're bound to find some surprises in vintage trailers. For one, we discovered the structural support of this girl was not in her walls, but came from the interior cabinets. In fact, the aluminum-coated exterior walls offered no support.  The horizontal wall supports weren't even nailed to the vertical supports!  Just cut pieces of lumber stuck in between the insulation.  Apparently, this was unique to the HiLander.  They were built to be lightweight and economical, not necessarily built to last 40+ years!  New walls, insulation, and well-built storage cabinets are going in.  Robin will be stronger than ever!  The floor was patched where old plumbing and gas lines used to protrude.
